I bought the MiFi a couple of weeks ago primarily to give me Internet access on the commuter rail (I live in Salem MA and have a 45 minute commute into Boston).
The Amazon price for the MiFi was just under $70 which was a lot less than any place else as far as I could determine. I like the fact that I am not locked into a contract and the $20/month for 500 MB seems pretty competitive.
The Virgin Mobile MiFi is actually connecting to the Sprint cell towers and I didn't know how good the coverage would be down the tracks between Salem and Boston. As it turns out, the coverage is reasonable. There do seem to be a few dead spots but the coverage is good enough that I can check my email and browse which is all I expected.

I wanted something to connect my iTouch to the web while on the road. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to set up. But, I wasn't ready for something that made me look longingly back at the days of a 300 baud modem! This thing is the slowest piece of junk around! It took 5 minutes for a small, text-based page to load on the web. Of course, the first question that comes up is, "Do you get Sprint/Virgin service in your area?" Yes...and people like it. My old Kindle (Gen 1 that uses Sprint) loads up web pages just fine....in fact, I'm already surfing the web with it before the MiFi even gets started loading the page. Save your money. Use smoke signals...they'd be faster than this piece of junk. (I'd rate this with 0 stars, but you have to give it at least 1.)

I originally had the VM broadband2go which I purchased at Walmart. Incidentally, Walmart is the best place to purchase this unit since they have an exclusive deal for $20 you get a months worth of service. (Unless you are using it for video downloads). The unit knows it has been purchased at walmart. The broadband2go dongle I purchased did get hot and I didn't like it sticking out of my netbook so I decided to purchase the mi-fi2200 in case I get a tablet without a USB port. It works great even though it is slow. I am able to get on the internet while in a car, on a train or anywhere else that doesn't have wifi. I love the fact that I am not paying $$ every month but only when needed. I am very happy with this device and would recomment it for basic e mail and web browsing.
